Portugal Golden Visa Program Upward Trend Continues

(€1.51 Billion Investments from 2,502 Applicants from 38 Countries)

Data released by the Immigration and Borders Service shows that Portugal issued 37 Golden Visas in September 2015 and received €21.1 million investments in the month from wealthy applicants. Except for one application that was related to transfer of capital into the country, all other applicants obtained the Golden Visa in lieu of property investments in Portugal.

In August 2015, Portugal had issued 35 visas and had attracted investments worth €21.6 million. 480 Portugal Golden Visas offering fast-track permanent residence in the country have been issued in the first nine months of 2015. Since the launch of the investment immigration scheme in October, 2015, Portugal has issued a total of 2,502 visas till date—494 in 2013 and 1526 in 2014.

As of September, 2015, the Portugal Golden Visa Program has attracted total investments of €1.517 billion with a significant chunk of investments, around €1.37 billion, flowing into the country’s real estate sector. The next most-popular investment option is capital transfers, which has received investments worth €146.6 million

With 27 out of the 37 visas issued in September 2015 going to Chinese applicants, it is evident that changes made after instances of corruption were uncovered in November 2014 have not affected the Program’s popularity amongst Chinese investors.

Chinese applicants have accounted for 1,966 visas since the launch of Portugal Golden Visa program. Brazil, which accounted for three visas in September, is second with 95 visas. Investors from Russia are third with 86 visas since October, 2012. Including the four applications cleared in September, South Africa accounts for 67 Visas. In all, applicants from 38 countries have received permanent residence permits under the Program.
