Decline in Chinese Demand for Portugal’s Golden Visa after Corruption Investigations

Requests for Portugal’s Golden Visa program from Chinese applicants has fallen by 20% since instances of corruption and violation of rules came to light in November 2014. Speaking on the issue, the Portuguese Communities Secretary indicated that increase in demand from other countries has made up for the sudden decrease.

Highlighting the Portuguese government’s commitment to operating the Program in an efficient and transparent manner, the Secretary stated that efforts were being made to punish those guilty of violating the rules. Thus far, 11 persons including the General Director of the Foreigners and Border Agency have been detained following the corruption investigation.

Until March 2015, around 3500 visas had been issued, with Chinese applicants close to €1.4 billion and receiving more than 66% of all visas issued under the Scheme. After Chinese nationals, demand for visas was high amongst citizens of Brazil, Russia, and South Africa
