A growing number of residents in the UAE and other countries in the Middle East are investing heavily to obtain a second passport, with around 30 to 40 per cent of applicants to Malta’s Individual Investor Program (IIP) coming from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA).

MENA residents have proven to be one of the top investors in the Maltese citizenship program, second only to Russia and Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) residents.

The trend of citizenship and residency through investments has significantly changed over the last few years. Professionals in this area have seen a growing interest from Middle East residents in obtaining a second passport. The main drivers for citizens in MENA are well beyond money. Most applicants in the MENA region are looking to invest in countries more substantially for security and safety reasons.

With Malta ranked as one of the world’s top ten retirement destinations in 2015 by the Annual Global Retirement Index, and the country’s IIP rated as the best citizenship-by-investment program in the world it is no surprise that investors are lining up to apply for the Maltese IIP scheme.

Malta’s IIP has already attracted more than 700 applications since its launch last year, resulting in over a billion Euros being invested in the island nation.

Investors interested in acquiring Maltese citizenship through the IIP are required to contribute 650,000 Euros to Malta’s National Development and Social Fund, and are also required to either purchase a residential property worth 350,000 Euros, or rent a property for at least 16,000 Euros a year.
