A report released by the Vox news website has named the United States as the most favored destination of migrants from over 27 countries around the world.
The report, which is based on data from Reddit and United Nations, reveals that highest number of migrants to the US were from South America, most of whom arrive in the US in search of better work opportunities to support their families back home. Annual foreign remittances from the US to the South American countries of Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador amount to $12.2 billion.
And according to a report by Migration Policy Institute, 20% of the world’s migrants arrive in the US, and a quarter of the current US population today comprises of first- and second-generation immigrants.
Mass immigration, mainly of low-skilled labor, has been generally encouraged in the US, both under Obama and Bush governments. President Barack Obama’s administration used an executive order to allow five million illegal immigrants to avoid deportation last year. “The country is a nation of immigrants, and ultimately it will reflect who we are and its politics are going to reflect who we are,” said Obama in his speech last year.
Data from the US Census Bureau suggests that the country’s total foreign-born population will increase by 85% by 2060.
